What's in the Bag - Lab

WHAT’S IN THE BAG?

PROBLEM: What kinds of changes can matter undergo?

HYPOTHESIS: I think matter can undergo either a ______________________ change or a __________________change because a physical change will _________________________ __________________________________________________________and a chemical change will _______________________________________________________________________________.

VARIABLES: Manipulated: chemicals that are put together
Responding: _____________________________________________________
Controlled: ______________________________________________________

MATERIALS: see page 102
PROCEDURE: SEE PAGE 102 EXCEPT
-put in phenol red solution first (10 drops)
-use 2 scoops (4mL) of calcium chloride and 2 scoops (4mL) of sodium
bicarbonate (baking soda)
-STEP SIX: look at the bag 10 minutes after to get final results

OBSERVATION:

ANALYSIS:
Page 102 #3
-When I mixed water and phenol red I saw a _____________________ change

because ______________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________
-When I added the above mixture and calcium chloride I saw a ________________

change because ___________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________

-When I added the above mixture and baking soda I saw a ___________________

change because ___________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________________

Page 105 #2
a. Sugar dissolving is a ____________________________________ change because _________________________________________________________________________
b. A steak well cooked is a ________________________________ change because _________________________________________________________________________
c. A filament in a bulb is a _________________________________ change because __________________________________________________________________________
d. A piece of chalk being crushed is a _______________________ change because __________________________________________________________________________
e. When a plant grows taller it is a _________________________ change because __________________________________________________________________________
CONCLUSION:
I think matter can undergo two types of changes, either ________________________ or _______________________________________. First there is ____________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
ERROR AND/OR CHANGES:
